Does SEO Work for Powder Coating Shops? Results from 174 Shops

Does SEO work for powder coating shops? Yes: in my study of 174 powder coating shops in 20 US towns, the shops at the top of Google Maps had the same few things set up, and most of them you can set up yourself. The guide below takes you through them step by step, with the full research underneath it, and if you'd rather hand it off, that's what SEO for powder coating companies is for.

Data from October 2026

Step 1: Set your main category to Powder coating service

The main (primary) category on your Google Business Profile tells Google what your shop is. Set it to Powder coating service: 9 out of 10 of the top 3 map shops use it. Fix it before anything else; in my experience, posting on Google or social media never makes up for a wrong category. More on picking it: the best Google Business Profile category for powder coating.

Step 2: Use your real business name, with nothing added

If "powder" or "coat" is in your real business name, make sure your profile shows it exactly as it is: 8 out of 10 of the top 3 shops have it. If it isn't, don't add it. Google says "Including unnecessary information in your business name isn't permitted, and could result in the suspension of your Business Profile." The rest of the profile setup is on Google Business Profile for powder coating.

Step 3: Collect reviews that name the work

Ask each customer for a review that says where the job was, what you coated and how it came out: the wheels, the frame, the railings, the colour. The top 3 shops get about 4 reviews naming the work for every 1 lower down. In my experience, a review every week counts for more than a big pile of them once. If you have fewer than 10, ask your last five happy customers first. Never pay for a review or post a review for a customer.

Step 4: Give each job its own page on your website

Build a page for powder coating, then a page for each other job you want more of: sandblasting, wheels, Cerakote, railings. Most shop websites don't have these pages yet, so the ones that do stand out: shops with a powder coating page showed up in their town's normal results about 3 times as often. Link your Google Business Profile to your own website, not a social page. What that website looks like is on powder coating website design, and the pages that win manufacturing work are on SEO for industrial powder coaters.

Step 5: Make your name, address and phone match everywhere

Your shop's name, address and phone should read the same, letter for letter, on your profile, your website and every online directory or platform you're on. Then get listed wherever the shops at #1 and #2 on your map are listed. The study didn't measure this, but in my experience mismatched details are the most common problem I find.

The research behind the guide

Everything above comes from one snapshot of Google in October 2026: 174 shops, 20 towns, 3 searches. It shows what goes with a higher place on the map, not proof that a single change moves a shop, and the limits are spelled out below.

What the top 3 on Google Maps do

Of the 174 shops, 59 are in the top 3 on Google Maps for "powder coating" in their town and 115 are #4 to #10. These are raw comparisons, nothing held fixed: they describe what the top shops do, not what causes the rank.

Does SEO work for powder coating shops? What moved the map

Each shop was measured against its own town, with distance, reviews, name, website and photos held fixed. These three held up in all 3 searches:

What the shop controlsMap places above similar shops: "powder coating" / "near me" / "wheel powder coating"How sure
Primary category Powder coating serviceAbout 3 / 3 / 6Solid
The service in the business nameAbout 2 / 3.5 / 5Solid
Reviews that name the work (none to all of the newest)About 1.7 / 3.7 / 8.5Solid

The business name only counts as the shop's real name (see the guide above). How I put all of this together for a shop is on the local SEO for powder coating shops page.

How much does distance matter in Google Maps?

Distance is the one thing a shop can't change. Each doubling of distance from the searcher went with about 1.6 places lower for "powder coating" and 2.5 for "powder coating near me". The top 3 sat at a median of 5.7 km from the search point; #4 to #10 at 7.9 km. For "wheel powder coating" distance wasn't clear: people drive further for wheels, or Google widens the radius.

Coaters sit in industrial areas, away from the town centre. In a downtown view of the map, only 58 of the 174 top-10 shops show at all. A shop that isn't the closest to the searcher competes on what it controls: its category, its name and its reviews. Limit: every search was made from the town centre, so this shows that being near the searcher wins, not where your buyers are.

Do powder coating shops show up in Google's normal results?

Not often yet, because most shop sites aren't set up for those searches. Shop sites in the top 20 normal results from their own town: 8 of 131 for "powder coating" plus the town (like "powder coating Denver"), 5 for "powder coating near me" and 11 for "wheel powder coating" plus the town. The rest is directories, Yelp and big sites.

The shops that do show up usually have a page for the service:

Shops in the normal top 20 for at least 1 of the 3 searchesWith the pageWithout
Powder coating page17 of 65 (26%)5 of 66 (8%)
Sandblasting page8 of 25 (32%)14 of 106 (13%)

Small numbers, and not held fixed for other factors. Read it as "shops in the normal results usually have a page for the service", not an exact multiplier. Wheels and Cerakote pages: too few sites (11 and 5) to say.

Do reviews help a powder coating shop rank?

In this trade, what the reviews say mattered more than how many. Of 1,497 reviews with text, 710 (47%) name the work: powder, coat, wheels, rims, blasting, Cerakote, colour, finish. For top-3 shops it's 56% of their reviews; for #4 to #10, 42%. Among each shop's 20 newest reviews, the median top-3 shop has 4 that name the work, against 1. With everything else equal, a shop whose newest reviews all name the work sat about 1.7 / 3.7 / 8.5 places above a shop whose reviews don't, for "powder coating" / "near me" / "wheel powder coating".

The number of reviews showed no clear effect for the two main searches. Powder coaters have few reviews overall: the median shop has 11, and 80 of 174 have fewer than 10. So a shop doesn't need hundreds; it needs customers who say what was coated.

Does a powder coating shop's website still matter?

Yes, for the normal results above: a page per service is the way in. 43 of 174 shops (25%) have no website on the profile, a broken site, or only a social page. 10 of the 59 top-3 shops have no website at all. Of 131 working sites, 93 (71%) have neither a quote form nor a quote link. Most shops ask buyers to phone or email. Service pages are rare: wheels 11 of 131 sites, sandblasting 25, railings or architectural 14, Cerakote 5.

The study didn't test whether a quote form moves the map.

Is SEO worth it if most of my work is word of mouth?

Keep your word of mouth. Search reaches the buyers nobody sent you, and for a powder coating shop that mostly happens on Google Maps. The steps above are mostly settings you can change yourself, so check them before you pay anyone for marketing.

Can a beginner do SEO?

Yes, the first steps. The primary category is a setting on your Google Business Profile. Asking customers to name the work in their reviews is a habit. A page per service is content you already know. Those are the levers this study found.

Is SEO dead now with AI?

Not for local shops. These map results were pulled in October 2026, and the category, name and reviews still went with higher places in all 3 searches. When I asked Google's AI Mode for "powder coating near me" in the same 20 towns, it answered with shops from Google Maps in 18 of them: see how powder coating shops show up in AI search.

Is SEO still relevant in 2026?

Yes. The map results on this page are from October 2026: in 19 of 20 towns, the #1 shop for "powder coating" uses the primary category Powder coating service.

Is PPC better than SEO?

This study didn't measure ads, so it can't compare them. What it shows is where unpaid searches go: mostly to the map, where the settings above went with higher places.

Does posting on Google My Business help SEO?

This study can't say: profile posts weren't measured. In my experience, posting never makes up for a wrong category, so set the category first.

How much does SEO cost on Google?

This study didn't measure what shops pay for SEO, so it can't price it. Most of what it found are settings a shop owns: the primary category, asking customers to name the work, and a page per service. My own plan is $297 a month: leads in 3 months, or I work for free until you get them. See the $297 price and how the guarantee works.

How the study was done

The sample

  • 20 US towns: 6 big, 8 mid, 6 small. Mobile Google Maps, US English, pinned to the town centre, a wider zoom that shows the industrial areas, top 20 per search.
  • 174 shops: the top 10 Maps results for "powder coating" in each town (Hattiesburg 2, Chico 4, Joplin 5, Bangor 5, Bozeman 9; the rest 10). 59 are in the top 3, 115 are #4 to #10.
  • Each shop's position was also checked for "powder coating near me" and "wheel powder coating" (top 20 each).
  • Reviews: the 20 newest per shop, 1,966 in all, 1,497 with text.
  • Websites: 131 own sites checked, 34 shops with no website on the profile, 7 broken or blocked, 2 pointing at a social page only.
  • Normal results: 3 searches x 20 towns, from the town centre, top 20 (60 pulls).
  • Data pulled 2026-10-30. Shop names stay out of everything published.

What I checked for every shop

  • Map rank. Top 10 for "powder coating", plus the top 20 for "powder coating near me" and "wheel powder coating". Mobile Google Maps, US English, pinned to each town centre.
  • Google Business Profile. Primary category, business name, reviews (the 20 newest per shop) and what they say, distance from the search point.
  • Website. 131 own sites: a page per service, headings and title, a quote form or quote link.
  • Normal results. Google's normal results for "powder coating" plus the town name, "powder coating near me" and "wheel powder coating" plus the town name from each town centre.

The 20 towns

6 big, 8 mid-size and 6 small towns: the same towns as my screen printing study.

  • Big: Houston TX, Atlanta GA, Phoenix AZ, Denver CO, Philadelphia PA, Seattle WA.
  • Mid-size: Boise ID, Knoxville TN, Spokane WA, Des Moines IA, Grand Rapids MI, Tulsa OK, Greenville SC, Fort Wayne IN.
  • Small: Bozeman MT, Hattiesburg MS, Joplin MO, Wausau WI, Chico CA, Bangor ME.

How each factor was tested

A same-town comparison: each shop measured against the other shops in its own town, with distance, reviews, name, website and photos held fixed together, and 2,000 re-draws of whole towns for the range (90%). "Clear" means the 90% range doesn't cross zero. It's one snapshot, so it shows what goes with a better position once the other factors are equal, not a before-and-after test.

How sure is each finding

About 21 tests were run. At this range about 2 "clear" results could be luck, so a finding is only reported as solid when it is clear in all 3 searches and fits how local ranking works. Distance is clear in 2 of 3 searches, and the wheels exception has a reason. The normal-results pages are shares with small counts, so they're shown with that limit. Because the sample is the top 10 for "powder coating", ranks for that search run 1 to 10 only.

Unconfirmed leads (not advice)

  • Listing a website on the profile: about 2 places for "powder coating near me" only; the other searches disagree.
  • The total number of reviews: clear only for "wheel powder coating".
  • The service in the homepage H1 (51% of top-3 sites against 29%), a quote form (32% against 25%), LocalBusiness schema, fresh reviews and owner replies: shares only, not tested.

What we did not measure

  • Profile posts.
  • Links.
  • Additional categories beyond the primary.
  • The profile description and services list.

Rather have me do it for you?

Every step in the guide is what I set up for shops on my plan, at $297 a month. If you don't get leads in 3 months, I work for free until you get them, and I only take one powder coating shop per area.
